Kananmunat rikkoutuvat herkästi keitettäessä.

Syy tähän piilee kananmunan sisällä olevissa vesimolekyyleissä, jotka höyrystyvät ja laajenevat lämmetessään. Höyry laajenee munan sisällä halkaisten sen kuoren.

Näppärin tapa ehkäistä kananmunan halkeaminen ja valkuaisroippeiden päätyminen pitkin kattilaa on pienen reiän puhkaiseminen kuoreen. Reikä kannattaa tehdä varovasti esimerkiksi nuppineulalla kananmunan laakean pään keskelle.

Allaolevassa laitteessa neula törröttää juuri sopivalla parin millin etäisyydellä – kun asetat munan piikin päälle, piikki lävistää munan siten että sisällä oleva kalvo ei rikkoudu. Näin valkuainen pysyy paikoillaan keitettäessä eikä kuori halkea.
